Xing is the Chinese word for Star. The shapes and configurations of stars within patchwork are many and oh, so varied! This class combines the fun of turning basic crumb blocks into star centers with string blocks as the alternate block creating a quilt with loads of scrap-appeal that is truly easier than it looks. Students can even swap strips and strings with each other for more variety. We’ll be using my Essential Triangle Tool to cut the star point and background triangles for each star block from strips.
Straits of Mackinac: (String Frenzy Book Required)
The Straits of Mackinac are a series of narrow waterways in Michigan. Every year the Grand Hotel hosts a needle art seminar and I’ve been lucky enough to teach there three times. The main star block in this quilt was featured under the same name in Volume 14 of Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 Blocks by 100 Designers after my last visit to Mackinac Island. After making just one block I knew that I had to keep sewing until I had enough for a full quilt.
